Blog Tour and Giveaway | Dear Teen Me Edited by Miranda Kenneally and E. Kristin Anderson

Today I have the pleasure of hosting one of many stops in the Dear Teen Me Blog Tour.

While time does not allow me to draft my own Dear Teen Me letter, I would recommend this book to all teens and adults a like. I didn’t read all of the letters but the ones that I did really touched me. I would have to say that Carrie Jones’ letter was one of the best. It actually really concerned me because my husband just had a case of mono.

Zest Books | October 30, 2012 | 192 pages

Summary (Goodreads)

Dear Teen Me includes advice from over 70 YA authors (including Lauren Oliver, Ellen Hopkins, and Nancy Holder, to name a few) to their teenage selves. The letters cover a wide range of topics, including physical abuse, body issues, bullying, friendship, love, and enough insecurities to fill an auditorium. So pick a page, and find out which of your favorite authors had a really bad first kiss? Who found true love at 18? Who wishes he’d had more fun in high school instead of studying so hard? Some authors write diary entries, some write letters, and a few graphic novelists turn their stories into visual art. And whether you hang out with the theater kids, the band geeks, the bad boys, the loners, the class presidents, the delinquents, the jocks, or the nerds, you’ll find friends–and a lot of familiar faces–in the course of Dear Teen Me.

[amazon_link id=”1423135008″ target=”_blank” ]Jepp, Who Defied the Stars[/amazon_link] by Katherine Marsh

Hyperion Book | October 9, 2012 | 400 pages

Summary (Gooodreads)

Fate:
Is it written in the stars from the moment we are born?
Or is it a bendable thing that we can shape with our own hands?
Jepp of Astraveld needs to know.
He left his countryside home on the empty promise of a stranger, only to become a captive in a luxurious prison: Coudenberg Palace, the royal court of the Spanish Infanta. Nobody warned Jepp that as a court dwarf, daily injustices would become his seemingly unshakable fate. If the humiliations were his alone, perhaps he could endure them; but it breaks Jepp’s heart to see his friend Lia suffer.
After Jepp and Lia attempt a daring escape from the palace, Jepp is imprisoned again, alone in a cage. Now, spirited across Europe in a kidnapper’s carriage, Jepp fears where his unfortunate stars may lead him. But he can’t even begin to imagine the brilliant and eccentric new master–a man devoted to uncovering the secrets of the stars–who awaits him. Or the girl who will help him mend his heart and unearth the long-buried secrets of his past.
Masterfully written, grippingly paced, and inspired by real histori-cal characters, “Jepp, Who Defied the Stars “is the tale of an extraordinary hero and his inspiring quest to become the master of his own destiny.

Katherine Marsh Guest Post

Titles

Greetings, Jess and Cozy Reader Readers!

Jess has asked me to write about titles, how I came up with mine and what factors influence me when I’m devising a title. Jepp, Who Defied the Stars is my third novel for young readers and was probably the hardest to figure out a title for. Partly this is because the story isn’t easy to explain. I can basically guarantee that Jepp is the most unusual book you’ll read all year. It’s a coming-of-age, adventure/ romance story that stars a dwarf and has a supporting cast that includes a giant, a nose-less astronomer, and a beer-drinking moose. And nope, it’s not fantasy either. A majority of the characters were actually real historical figures. Plus the book also attempts to answer—or at least explore—one of the biggest philosophical questions: Are our lives determined by fate and circumstance or can we change them through our own actions?

So back to that title question: How in heck do you come up with 1-7 words that encapsulate all this? It’s not easy. It’s especially not easy when you’re trying to do the job three weeks after having a baby, when only about a quarter of your brain is operational. But that’s just what I had to do. When my daughter was three weeks old, I had to start generating title ideas. This meant sending my preschooler out with dad, turning off Teen Mom reruns, and getting serious.

I always start the title process by devising a long list of all the words and terms that could possibly apply to my book.  Astrology is one of the big themes of the book—at 14, Jepp is taken to the royal court of the Spanish Netherlands to be a court dwarf and receives his first horoscope. So is astronomy—after Jepp is involved in an epic tragedy at court he finds himself pressed into service to the nose-less astronomer mentioned above. The word “stars” seemed to touch both on the science/free will aspect of the story as well as on the astrology/fate part. Jepp is such a huge character–no pun intended, just wait till you get to know him–that even before I came up with a title, I referred to my working draft as simply Jepp.

The hard part was uniting the “stars” and “Jepp” together. A good title needs a sense of drama and mystery—it’s the story in miniature but it makes you want to know more. My wonderful editor, Abby Ranger, hit on the words defy and defiance. That’s when it clicked: Jepp, Who Defied the Stars. The crux of Jepp’s story is his defiant attempt to change his own fate—a fate seemingly determined by his height, by his family, and by the tragedies and secrets that shape him. How does he do this? How can we all change who we are and escape our past? Not to leave you on a cliffhanger, but you’ll have to read my book to find out.

Harlequin Teen | September 25, 2012 | 416 pages

Summary (Goodreads)

She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real….

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.
I’d tell my sister no.
I’d never beg my mother to talk to my dad.
I’d zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.
Or, barring all of that, I’d hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.
I’d tell them I love them.
I wish… Yeah, I wish.

“Cole once ate a pound of rusty nails  and claimed it tasted like unicorn tears mixed with fairy dust.  True story.  I was there.” (said by Kat Parker)

[amazon_link id=”B009B1N1IC” target=”_blank” ]Of Blood and Bone (The Minaldi Legacy)[/amazon_link] by Courtney Cole

Lakehouse Press | September 16, 2012 | 226 pages (est)

Summary (Goodreads)

As a little boy, Luca Minaldi was told he was a monster.
As an adult, he knows it is true.

He lives in Malta, a fairytale-like place filled with sunshine and sea, beauty and secrets. And Luca’s darkest of secrets is the best kept of them all.

Eva Talbot arrives in Malta for the summer to finish up her doctoral dissertation. When she meets Luca, a mysterious and handsome shipping tycoon, there is an instant attraction, a disturbing and beautiful energy that she has never felt before. But she senses the darkness that lives within him.

Eva is hired to care for his mother, who suffers from dementia, but it is Luca who Eva will eventually risk everything to save. Her life becomes a swirling chaos of darkness and romance, of secrets and mystery. And the question that emerges will become the most important answer of all.

Can she save Luca from the darkness that plagues him without losing herself?

The answer is a matter of life or death.

Teaser Quote

 Eva’s Point of View

Luca crosses the room in three strides and pours two glasses of what looks to be Scotch.  He walks back and hands me a glass.  I can practically feel the power emanating from him.  He’s the type of person who has been born into it.  It has been cultivated in him from the time he was an infant and it shows.  Power and money are in every molecular strand in his body.

“To sanity,” Luca says, tipping his glass toward mine. And then he downs his in one gulp.

I take a tentative sip and realize quickly that I was correct.  It’s Scotch.  Neat.  Without one ounce of tonic or even an ice cube to dilute it.  It burns my mouth and warms my chest as it slides smoothly down.  But for some reason, I don’t want him to know that it makes me want to gag and cough.  I want to seem unfazed, so I drink the rest in two gulps and hand Luca back the empty glass.

It is worth my numb lips because there is approval in his eyes as he takes it.

“Aren’t you going to ask?” he says as he sets the glasses down on a heavy wooden side table.  He is still staring at me and his gaze makes me feel like my skin will be ablaze soon.

“Ask what?”  I feel slightly woozy from the Scotch.  And to be honest, I’m also woozy from being so near to Luca Minaldi.  For several different reasons, he has an interesting effect on me.

“Wouldn’t you like to ask me if you’re safe here with me?”

I look at him, remembering his mother’s startling words.  My son is evil.

“Am I?” I ask and my voice is barely a murmur.

“Probably not.”

Luca’s voice is quiet in the study, as dark as the night surrounding us, and I suddenly feel like I should run, somewhere far away from here.  But at the same time, I know that I won’t.  I am ridiculously drawn to this man and the more I find out about him, the more I want to know.  So I shake my head.

“I’m not afraid.”

Luca looks at me again and I don’t see one ounce of the vulnerability that I have seen there before.  Instead, he is expressionless once more and darkly handsome.

“Well, that’s the rub,” he answers.  “You should be.”
