My giveaway is listed below. Please follow the directions to enter below!

Best of 2011

Picking a “best” book is not an easy task for me. As I stated in yesterday’s intro post I don’t usually accept or read books that I don’t expect to like. However, today’s pick isn’t hard for me for several reasons.

1. Dystopian elements

2. Strong female protagonist

3. Awesome technology

4. World building

5. Romance

6. Unexpected twists and turns

7. Emotion – when a book makes me cry, OMG Love.

8. Debut Author – seriously?! I want more books!

What book could possibly have all of these? A book I recently read but have not sat down to review. A book that will be released in August and is truly worth pre-ordering RIGHT NOW!

A Long, Long Sleep by Anna Sheehan352 pages, Candlewick, (2011-08-09)

$9.99 (Amazon.com)

However, I love this book so much I’m going to pre-order it for one lucky winner and this giveaway is International if you live in one of the countries listed on this list that The Book Depository ships to.

Summary (Goodreads)

Rosalinda Fitzroy has been asleep for 62 years when she is woken by a kiss. Locked away in the chemically-induced slumber of a stasis tube in a forgotten sub-basement, sixteen-year-old Rose slept straight through the Dark Times that killed millions and utterly changed the world she knew. Now, her parents and her first love are long dead, and Rose – hailed upon her awakening as the long-lost heir to an interplanetary empire – is thrust alone into a future in which she is viewed as either a freak or a threat. Desperate to put the past behind her and adapt to her new world, Rose finds herself drawn to the boy who kissed her awake, hoping that he can help her to start fresh. But when a deadly danger jeopardizes her fragile new existence, Rose must face the ghosts of her past with open eyes – or be left without any future at all.

Anna Sheehan says of A Long, Long Sleep, her first novel, “I always thought the interesting thing about Sleeping Beauty wasn’t why she was put to sleep, but what she had to come to terms with afterward. Everything would have changed radically—technology and politics as well as social structure. She would have seemed like a foreigner in her own country.”Anna Sheehan lives in rural Oregon. 1. Leeswammes (Judith)

Seems like a great book! I hadn’t heard of it yet, but it’s one I’d love to read.

My best (new) book so far is The White Devil by Justin Evans – http://leeswammes.wordpress.com/2011/05/10/book-review-the-white-devil-by-justin-evans/ It’s spooky, well written and just… great!

      1. The Cozy Reader

Thanks for the recommendation! That one looks super creepy but still very interesting!

    2. Susanna P

Thanks for the giveaway! A Long, Long Sleep looks like my type of book.

My favorite reads this year are Across the Universe, Memento Nora, and An Atlas of Impossible Longing. The first two are great dystopias that have societal messages as well, while An Atlas has a magical quality to its writing and tells a great story.

      1. The Cozy Reader

I’m in agreement with you on Across the Universe, while not a favorite of mine I really enjoyed it’s elements and I’m looking forward to the next installment. You’ll love A Long, Long Sleep if you’re a fan of ATU!

    3. Kare

This one is actually on my list :) I doubt I could choose just one from my list but if I HAD to it would be The Liar Society. Here is my list http://epicbooknerd.blogspot.com/2011/05/armchair-bea-good-books-in-11-so-far.html

      1. The Cozy Reader

        Great list! Thanks for sharing!

    4. Jacinda @ The Reading Housewives

The 2 books I’ve enjoyed the most recently are Die For Me and Divergent! You can see the rest of my Best of 2011 here: Armchair BEA: Best Books of 2011(so far)

      jacindahinten(at)gmail(dot)com

      1. The Cozy Reader

I too enjoyed Die for Me, I haven’t reviewed it yet. I have Divergent but haven’t read it yet! Thanks for the link!

    5. Bonnie @ A Backwards Story

I loved this book! I did a YOU’RE GONNA LOVE ME post in April for Fairy Tale Fortnight, but am saving the review for closer to release. I would love to win a physical copy! :)

My post: http://abackwardsstory.blogspot.com/2011/05/armchair-bea-best-of-2011.html My number one is either DELIRIUM by Lauren Oliver or THE NEAR WITCH by Victoria Schwab!

      1. The Cozy Reader

Bonnie, I’m so happy to hear the love for this book too! :) I really hope it’s not over looked because it was fantastic!

I too just LOVED Delirium! Although I think I loved Matched a tiny bit more but they were both great!

    6. Vivien

      Mine are:
      Madame Tussaud by Michelle Moran
      Forbidden by Tabatha Suzuma
The Dark and Hollow Places by Carrie Ryan
      Enclave by Ann Aguirre

      1. The Cozy Reader

Nice list! I’ve only read the first book of Carrie’s series and enjoyed it but I’m very hesitant to pick up the rest of the series. :( I’m not keen on the zombies quite yet!

I have a review copy of Enclave I hope to get to very soon!

    7. Vivien

      I forgot why :)
Madame Tussaud was written so well. The historical information is phenomenal.
Forbidden is so emotionally raw….it’s a must for everyone, even if the topic is taboo.
Dark and Hollow Places….if you look at my email you’ll know why. I adore Carrie Ryan. And this was an excellent conclusion.
Enclave….just the tip of the iceberg for me. I’ve become addicted to this series and can’t wait for more.

      1. The Cozy Reader

        Thanks for clarifying why! :)

    8. Alyce

My favorite has a similar theme (although different in many ways I’m sure). I liked Across the Universe by Beth Revis – the girl in the book is frozen for the space voyage and is woken early. I love that kind of “person out of time” story.

      1. The Cozy Reader

Great pick Alyce! I’ve actually read and reviewed ATU already and I too enjoyed it very much.

    9. Penelope

      My best of 2011 are:

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
      Tyger Tyger by Kersten Hamilton

      I loved these books!

      1. The Cozy Reader

Anna and the French Kiss was an AMAZING contemporary book Penelope! I usually don’t read that sort of thing but it sucked me in until I flipped the last page. Thanks for the comment!

    10. Jamie B

This looks soooooo good. I love Dysatopian type books. That is why I am going to say my Best of 2011 is Enclave (Razorland, #1)by Ann Aguirre. LOVED IT!!

      1. The Cozy Reader

I have a copy of Enclave to read and review, just haven’t gotten to it yet but I plan to get to it soon!

    11. Anna Sheehan

Wow! Thanks so much for the endorsement. I’ll do my best to live up to it.

      1. The Cozy Reader

Thanks for stopping by Anna! I’m amazed to find that you barely have an online presence and would love to maybe have you do a guest post near your release date. How’s that sound? Maybe Candlewick will support it and provide a giveaway copy? Feel free to email me directly at thecozreader@gmail.com or maybe I’ll shoot you an email later (super busy, today’s my hubby’s birthday and I should be baking his cake right now). :)

        1. Anna Sheehan

The e-mail link above didn’t work, but I’d be much pleased. Yes — my name is Anna, and I’m a techno-phobe… well, not really. I am working on a website. One of these days, honest.

          1. The Cozy Reader

Thanks Anna! Yeah, I misspelled my email address, sorry about that! It’s thecozyreader@gmail.com

I’ll be in touch about a guest post closer to your release date! :)

    12. usagi

I have SO many faves of 2011, and one of them is “Starcrossed”. It’s just so deliciously awesome. My entire list is here: http://witchoftheatregoing.wordpress.com/2011/05/24/armchair-bea-2011-my-best-of-2011-so-far-list-version-2-what-im-looking-forward-to/

And I have various reasons. Mostly because they blew my mind when I read them – it’s really that simple.

      1. The Cozy Reader

Thanks for the link usagi! I too LOVED Starcrossed. :)

    13. Kaitlyn in Bookland

      Thanks for the giveaway!

Here are my favorites in 2011!

      1. The Cozy Reader

Great list Kaitlyn! I haven’t gotten to James Dashner’s second book yet but I can’t wait. The Maze Runner was awesome.

    14. Nicci @ Paper Dreams

Thanks for the giveaway! I think the best book I have read in 2011 was Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. It has all the makings of a great story + a swoon-worthy romance. And my favorite book published so far in 2011 is probably Starcrossed, which I adore. I love the elements of Greek mythology and the romance. Plus it has a lot of great secondary characters. :)

      1. The Cozy Reader

Those are two of my favs too Nicci!

    15. Throuthehaze

Two of the books I really enjoyed are Wildefire and The Goddess Test. I love that they both have to do with mythology :)

      1. The Cozy Reader

I’m a fan of mythology too Throughthehaze! I really liked Starcrossed and would highly recommend it.

    16. Danya

I haven’t heard much about A Long, Long Sleep yet but it sounds like such a different kind of fairytale retelling! I’m seconding the Enclave love (I actually wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, but I really got sucked into the story and the protagonist Deuce was a great heroine) and here are a few more on my list: http://atapestryofwords.blogspot.com/2011/05/armchair-bea-best-of-2011-and-those.html.

Thanks very much for the giveaway!

      1. The Cozy Reader

You have a great list there!

    17. Bookish in a Box

My best of 2011 is Divergent by Veronica Roth because it’s poignant, romantic, action-packed and dystopian, along with being beautifully written! And after I read it, all I wanted to do was read it again.

      1. The Cozy Reader

I’m glad I have a copy of this one then! Can’t wait to get to it. :)

    18. Erica

My best of 2011 is Divergent. The main character has real flaws, but she always tries her hardest. The book has real depth and meaning.

      1. The Cozy Reader

Lots of love for Divergent. I’ll be putting it to the top of my list because it’s just been sitting on my TBR bookshelf for a while now.

    19. Rebecca

      This sounds good!!!

Here’s my ArmchairBEA post on top reads of the year (so far) http://awordsworth.blogspot.com/2011/05/armchair-bea-best-of-2011.html

      1. The Cozy Reader

Great list Rebecca! If you loved ATU you’ll probably like A Long Long Sleep too!

    20. lindsaywrites

love your books you chose! i’m a GFC follower of your blog now!

    21. Michelle

Oh, I have this one thanks to NetGalley. I can’t wait to read it now! Thanks for sharing!!

      1. The Cozy Reader

Yup, gotta love NetGalley! That’s where I got my copy.

    22. Laura

Awesome giveaway! Here’s my best of 2011 post for BEA:

      http://zealous-reader.blogspot.com/2011/05/armchair-bea-best-of-2011.html

      1. The Cozy Reader

Thanks for sharing your list! I haven’t heard of most of them but now I’ll check them out!

    23. Deavelle

Some of my favorite reads released this year are Divergent and Enclave. Yes! I loooove dystopian books. Between Shades of Gray and Delirium are awesome too.

      1. The Cozy Reader

Thanks Deavelle! I have copies of Divergent, Enclave and Shades of Gray but haven’t gotten to them yet! Sad, I know! I too loved Delirium. That would probably be one of my other picks and don’t forget Matched by Ally Condie, that was an awesome read!

    24. ArtsyBookishGal

I really enjoyed Wither by Lauren DeStefano. I’m not sure it’ll be my fave read though…

      1. The Cozy Reader

Thanks for the comment ArtsyBookishGal….but why did you enjoy Wither and why wouldn’t it be your favorite read?

I’ve read a few reviews of it, not too much though, because it’s one I want to read so I only skim the reviews. :)

        1. ArtsyBookishGal

What I liked about Wither was the first-person narrative of the book through the character of Rhine, a 16 year-old girl, who seems so much older than 16 year-olds in our culture because a dystopian society has caused her to grow up much faster. Conceptually, the world that Lauren DeStefano creates is believable–we could cure all disease, but could it make an even worse disease for future generations? Plus, I liked the sister-wives and their personalities clashes (though I don’t approve of sister-wives in real life.) But my fave thing about Wither has to be the cover…spectacular. You should definitely read it.

While I enjoyed Wither immensely, it wouldn’t be a favorite of 2011 because it didn’t leave me fully satisfied. For a book to be my favorite, it has to be really captivate me. I would say the best book I read this year was SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson, but that’s not a 2011 release.

          Thank you for asking! :)

*I actually wrote a spoiler-free review of WITHER here: http://www.backseatreader.net/2011/04/review-of-wither-by-lauren-destefano.html

          1. The Cozy Reader

Thanks for explaining! I’m in agreement about a book captivating you. That’s what A Long Long Sleep did for me. It wasn’t in the sense that I learned a life lesson but that I was just awed by the characters and what they overcame and that the author wrote something so well that I couldn’t or didn’t want to stop reading. I have Speak but I haven’t read it yet. I’ll have to add that to the top of my list too! :)

    25. Jordyn

I totally spaced on posting my best of 2011 today, but probably/definitely my favorite so far this year has been Sara Bennett Wealer’s contemporary YA, RIVAL. It’s just about ten types of amazing. :)

      1. The Cozy Reader

I haven’t heard of that title Jordyn, thanks for sharing!

    26. Miss Lauren

So far in 2011 I’ve most loved The Bee-Loud Glade by Steve Himmer. It’s so quirky and creative that I just couldn’t help being drawn into the story!

      1. The Cozy Reader

Erin, I haven’t heard of that title. Thanks for sharing! :)

    30. Sarah

      1. The Cozy Reader

Lots of people loving that book! I will read it, and soon! Thanks Sarah!

    31. Tara T.

My best of 2011 would have to include…Divergent, Where She Went and Delirium. I also really loved Inside Out which was released in 2010, but I just read it this year….I can’t WAIT for Crossed and The Scorpio Races…Also, SHATTER ME!!!!!

      1. The Cozy Reader

Awesome picks Tara! I have Where She Went but I didn’t love the first book so I can’t bring myself to pick it up.

    32. Verena B

The best book I read so far published in 2011 is The Throne of Fire by Rick Riordan, but my favourite discovery is Eyes Like Stars (which has been published in 2009, I believe)

      1. The Cozy Reader

        Great books Verena!

    33. Aik

My best of 2011 would have to be Daughter of Xanadu by Dori Jones Yang. It is a rich historical fiction for young adults which is mainly about the inner growth of the Great Khan Khubilai’s granddaughter, Princess Emmajin.

      1. The Cozy Reader

I haven’t heard of this one Aik, thanks for sharing!

        1. Aik

I have a whole list for my 2011 Top Picks, one of them is Forever by Maggie Stiefvater. I can’t wait!

      1. The Cozy Reader

Thanks for the comment Scoot but what’s your favorite read so far?

        1. Scoot

My favorite read so far this year is Divergent by Veronica Roth! :)

          1. The Cozy Reader

You and everyone else it seems! Man, I think I need to read that one next.

    35. aloveforbooks

I agree that one of the elements that I could say are in the “Best of 2011” is the emergence of the dystopian genre. Apart from that, I really like the book Sean Griswold’s Head. I would have said Divergent by Veronica Roth, but I haven’t fully read it yet; I’ve only seen the preview.

      1. The Cozy Reader

I want to read Sean Griswold’s Head so I’m glad to hear it’s good! Lots of people are loving Divergent so I will be making an effort to make that my next read! Thanks for commenting.
