Overall

An amazing epic journey of one girl and several young men, all with the intent to save one King’s life, by Kerrick’s forceful hand at least.

Summary (Goodreads)

Laying hands upon the injured and dying, Avry of Kazan absorbs their wounds and diseases into herself. But rather than being honored for her skills, she is hunted. Healers like Avry are accused of spreading the plague that has decimated the Fifteen Realms, leaving the survivors in a state of chaos.
Stressed and tired from hiding, Avry is abducted by a band of rogues who, shockingly, value her gift above the golden bounty offered for her capture. Their leader, an enigmatic captor-protector with powers of his own, is unequivocal in his demands: Avry must heal a plague-stricken prince—leader of a campaign against her people. As they traverse the daunting Nine Mountains, beset by mercenaries and magical dangers, Avry must decide who is worth healing and what is worth dying for. Because the price of peace may well be her life…

First Line

The little girl wouldn’t stop crying.

Most Memorable Scene

There are so many! I’d probably go with the first time Kerrick and Avry were running through the forest.

Plot

I was engrossed with this story from start to finish. Avry and Kerrick are on an epic journey to help heal a King. The many obstacles that they face and overcome are plentiful and exciting. I couldn’t stop reading to find out just how they were going to end their journey.

Setting

What a beautiful setting Maria made with her exquiste words! I was throw into this time period and didn’t want to leave. With the elemental and supernatural skills being used alongside the scenery it was a world that engulfs you completely.

Writing

Brilliantly written! I loved seeing the story from Avery’s first person, present point of view. You know I’m a sucker for the dual points of view but I actually liked not knowing what was going on in Kerrick’s head. It left another mystery to be solved right along side their journey.

Originality

I loved this book so much I can’t seem to think of any other book I’ve read quite like it. It is chock full of epic fantasy but not in the sense that you’re feeling the journey stretched to the max. I actually didn’t want it to ever end! It’s very much a mix of historic romance meets epic fantasy meets dystopia. I was thoroughly engrossed into all elements the story had to offer.

Characters

Avery is my kind of character. She’s a super strong lead character. She uses her special skill with care and you just know she’s a great person. She’s had a rough life but she is strong willed. The journey with Kerrick makes her a much stronger person it’s enlightening to see her change.

Kerrick is an amazing male lead character. At first I didn’t know if I should hate him or love him. In the end he was one of my favorite characters ever.

Kerrick’s men are a great pack of boys and men. I thoroughly enjoyed their presence in the book and was very attached to them.

Romance

It blossoms very slowly but it’s such a sweet, strong bond. The relationship between Kerrick and his men is one of the best bromances I’ve read.

Title/Cover Bonus

I LOVE the title and the cover is a-okay in my book!

Ending

Brilliant. It was so touching and I can’t wait to read the next book!

Series

Scent of Magic (Healer, #2) sometime in 2012.
