Paper Hearts

Paper Hearts by S.R. Savell

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed reading this book.

The summary had me sucked right in. Teen angst is a great thing and S.R. Savell writes it like a pro.

The characters are great. Michelle was a tad hard to like at first. She is rough around the edges. We learn that she is an unreliable narrator (hint, hint).

Nathaniel is amazing. I was expecting him to be supernatural or something because of his size and his presence. I almost wish some of the chapters were from his point of view. Michelle sums Nate up nicely:

You’re like Mary Poppins with a penis.

– page 29

Michelle and Nathaniel bond and create an odd but great friendship. That friendship hovers near a line of relationship. There is major chemistry between the two. Michelle has had a tough childhood and Nathaniel even more so.

We meet Nathaniel’s grandmother. She is super cool and added some awesomeness to the story.

Plot wise the story was strong. Since Michelle is an unreliable narrator it gets tricky towards the end. Some scenes are retold a few times because Michelle doesn’t want us to know the truth the first time, so pay attention! The truth that we learn is of a tough subject. This subject is rated R and not appropriate for a young audience.

I can’t say that I love the title, though the cover matches that perfectly.
I enjoyed this book very much. The sweet beginning won me over and the end, though traumatic, was handled with care and written perfectly.

THE BOOK THIEF

Based on the beloved best-selling book comes an “extremely moving” (Leonard Maltin, Indiewire) story of a girl who transforms the lives of those around her during World War II, Germany. When her mother can no longer care for her, Liesel (Sophie Nélisse) is adopted by a German couple (OSCAR® Winner Geoffrey Rush* and OSCAR® Nominee Emily Watson**). Although she arrives illiterate, Liesel is encouraged to learn to read by her adoptive father. When the couple then takes in Max (Ben Schnetzer), a Jew hiding from Hitler’s army, Liesel befriends him. Ultimately, words and imagination provide the friends with an escape from the events unfolding around them in this extraordinary, acclaimed film directed by Brian Percival (Downton Abbey).

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Good book but I didn’t like the ending.

It’s pretty much like the title says: “Why We Broke Up”. You get no more and no less.
Very good writing style and I loved the clip art in the beginning of the chapters. Was very cool to see them in color on my Kindle app.

Louder Than Words
Louder Than Words by Laurie Plissner

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a very good mystery.

I enjoyed Ben so, so, so much. Sasha was a great character and I enjoyed learning her story.
The supporting characters were also very important and very nice additions. Jules, Sasha’s Aunt and Uncle as well as Ben’s parents were great. The jocks were major A-holes.

I *sorta* felt like this was a Twilight fan fiction. I really couldn’t help it; especially in the beginning.

I do recommend this though. I enjoyed it very much.

Defy
Defy by Sara B. Larson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Defy by Sara B. Larson was an amazing read!

All of the characters were amazing. Each one of them warmed my heart. Except for the bad guys, obviously. But those villains were some of the best out there.

Alex is the perfect strong female lead character. What she overcomes left me with feelings of warmth and strength to conquer my own fears. She is so strong and kicks some major booty.

Prince Damian has a few tricks up his sleeve. His story is similar to Alex’s and we grow to love him.

The story is beautifully told with lots of action and surprises. The scenes are full of detail and painted the picture perfect.

I look forward to the next book in this series. I highly recommend this to lovers of epic fantasy and female heroins.

Many reviews mention the “love triangle” but for me it didn’t feel like a negative love triangle. I almost didn’t read it because of the love triangle but I am SO glad that I did.

My Thoughts

I have already read this book and it was amazing. If you didn’t request it via NetGalley yet I would highly suggest it! There is also a Goodreads giveaway that ends on Tuesday too.

I didn’t love this trailer though. This book has quite a few plot twists so I would imagine it to be difficult to create a trailer without spoiling the story for the reader. I felt Kitty’s voice was too soft spoken. If you didn’t love the trailer I still think the book will blow your mind. If you read The Selection series by Kiera Cass and enjoy movies/shows like The Bourne Identity, Alias or Covert Affairs you’ll love this book.

PAWN releases next Tuesday, November 26th.

Pawn_Button_1

Welcome to my stop on the PAWN Blog Tour!

Here’s a quick interview I had with Aimée.

Aimée I’d love to hear more about the advanced technology you developed for PAWN. Did you do some research? Did you maybe talk to some scientists, or did you just let your imagination flow?

Part of the fascination of Kitty’s society for me was the fact that they suffered economic collapse seventy-odd years earlier – and because of that, they’ve been focused on rebuilding instead of advancing technology that wasn’t necessary to sustaining life. There isn’t a whole lot of advanced technology in the series that doesn’t have root in something we have today, and that’s really because of what the society as a whole has gone through. In many ways, they’re still recovering.

Especially the motorized walkways and the “cloning” was very fascinating. How did you come up with these specific ideas?

The motorized walkways exist today in various places – for instance, airports – and the next logical step in my mind was having them in parts of cities that are populated by the rich. As far as Kitty being Masked goes, a lot of the inspiration from that comes from people even today who get thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of plastic surgery to try to look like famous people. Recently I read a story in the news about a man who spent a huge sum of money to look like Justin Bieber – and it’s following that same sort of possibility, but the scientists in Kitty’s world have had decades more time to perfect it.

What kind of technology that we will find in PAWN would you like to have for yourself?

The necklace Greyson gives Kitty. I don’t want to spoil too much, but having that kind of technology hanging around your neck would be amazing.

I agree! That necklace was pretty awesome!

About PAWN

YOU CAN BE A VII. IF YOU GIVE UP EVERYTHING.

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked—surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister’s niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There’s only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed …and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that’s not her own, she must decide which path to choose—and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she’s only beginning to understand.
